In biotechnology, flow cytometry is a laser-based, biophysical technology employed in cell counting, cell sorting, biomarker detection and protein engineering, by suspending cells in a stream of fluid and passing them by an electronic detection apparatus.
Using principles of fluid dynamics, photochemistry, and laser light sources, flow cytometers are able to classify and count individual cells at a rate of thousands/second. Most human cells have a cluster of differentiation (CD) that is specific to individual cell type. Using photochemical reagents, and monoclonal antibodies, these cell surface molecules can be tagged and counted. International protocols provide for preparation of individual cell types using separation techniques as a critical element of providing cell based samples and products that are pure and homogeneous. Additional, our facility has validated the 7-AAD assay as a replacement for the manual trypan blue methodology.
